ANIMAL SCENTS
from Young Living Canada
Experience, Innovation and Integrity - Since 1994

Formulated by a team of Veterinarians
Diluted for safe use on all animals from pocket pets to livestock

If you have a home with pets, the Animal Scents Line is a great collection to have. Covering all your bases from First Aid, Digestion, Insect Repellant, Skin Care and Mental Health,
it can be used on animals, people and kids

A portion of all proceeds from Animal Scents goes to support Vital Ground,
a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the habitat of wide-roaming wildlife

Animals are naturally connected to essential oils.  In nature, they graze on plants, herbs and grasses, scratch on bark and utilize the aromas of the natural world to communicate.

In the domesticated world, these animals now depend on us for everything: food, water, grooming and general health. There is nothing worse then the helpless feeling we get when they need us
to calm them during crisis or to get them emergency medical treatment.

Animals trust us, and their natural instincts and ability to sense fear is strong.  When we panic, they panic. Knowing how to help and having help on hand gives us the ability to ease their pain, calm their fear and support their natural ability to heal. For some pets, going to the Vet can be traumatic.  When we can support them at home, we can prevent unnecessary visits/costly bills.

In case of a medical emergency where veterinarian treatment is needed, we can respond in a way that reassures them that everything will be okay and provide triage to lessen trauma.

The best part about these oils is that they can be used on pets but also on people and kids.
The whole furry family can benefit from this collection. With aromas so beautiful, they can be diffused or safely used daily simply because they smell so amazing.

1 drop of Animals Scents essential oil blends is the perfect dilution for a 10 pound animal.  Smaller animals like chinchillas may find it intense because animals have a stronger sense of smell.  Just start with less and go from there.

Introduce slowly and by wearing the oil on your body first.  This allows it to mix with your scent which your pets already trust, forming a bond between you and your pet as they enjoy the experience.

There are 5 essential oil blends
and a shampoo that smells so good, you wish you had fur!

Pet Care
is a blend of 3 Young Living blends all designed to promote peace and wellbeing.
Harmony, Trauma Life, and Peace & Calming

This combined aroma that is diluted for animals can be worn by the human or is a great blend for the diffuser to calm the entire house.  Once an animal gets used to the aroma and associates it with safety, it can be applied directly to their fur and worn by them as an
aroma shield of protection giving them confidence and assurance.

There are 19 combined botanicals in this exclusive blend, diluted in a base of coconut oil

FIRST AID

Having a First Aid kit for animals on-hand can be very useful for many reasons:

If you are confident, the animal will sense it and feel more at ease.
You can provide triage in an emergency to lessen trauma before you get to the Vet
You can treat minor injuries and prevent infection avoiding unnecessary medical bills
You can travel safely with your pets knowing you have tools to help them if needed

Human chemical-laden first aid products shouldn't be used on animals,
so having something that won't hurt, sting or scare them is important

Having a reference book with you gives you direction for when you panic and your mind goes blank.
(Members of the Oily Garden Tribe need only to ask for their free book)

Animal Scents has 3 different blends to choose from for first-aid treatment,
depending on your needs and what works best for your animals.
Your natural instincts help you to know your animal better than anyone else.
Originally designed to work as a 3-Part system, any one of these is sufficient on its own to treat wounds, prevent infection and support healing

Puriclean

A blend that cleans wounds.  This works great on humans when your new kitten scratches you and you worry about the phrase "Cat Scratch Fever"!
It can be applied directly to their skin or coat to treat scrapes and scratches
and to support the prevention of infection.
It also provides a natural way to comfort dry, flaky, irritated skin and sore spots.

In a base of coconut oil (Caprylic/capric glycerides):
Pogostemon cablin (Patchouli) oil
Lavandula angustifolia (Lavender) oil
Satureja montana (Mountain Savory)
Cymbopogon nardus (Citronella) oil
Cymbopogon flexuosus (Lemongrass) oil
Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary) leaf oil
Melaleuca alternifolia (Tea Tree) leaf oil
Lavandula hybrida (Lavandin) oil
Myrtus communis (Myrtle) oil

Pet Fresh

A blend that supports your animals natural defence systems.  Guarding against contaminants, it contains oils the have special beneficial skin supporting properties. For healthy recovery of irritated coat or skin, it is perfect for treating scrapes and scratches.

Named Pet Fresh because its aroma is so cleansing that it can double as a doggie deodorant. If pooch is a little smelly after a swim in the fishy canal, meet your new Doggy Cologne.
Doubling as an insect repellant, it is perfect around the ankles to keep away pests on your walks.
Simply apply to your hand first and pet the fur.
Remember, this smell is stronger to them than us, so don't over apply.  One drop goes a long way.

This is a blend of exclusive oils you won't find anywhere else.
It contains botanicals grown on Young Livings farm in Ecuador.

Dorado Azul in particular is unique to Young Living who discovered its hidden antiseptic benefits in 2006 from the local indigenous population. The first to distill this previously unnamed "weed"  into an essential oil, "bush mint" has been used for centuries for emotional balance, insect repellant and support of the respiratory system.   Most amazing fact about this plant? The leaf tips turn blue when ready to harvest and the oil after distillation is red.

Palo Santo is a very expensive, hard to get essential oil (especially a pure one) that is usually obtained illegally and then watered down. But because Young Living has their own farms, they are able to provide therapeutic grade essential oils in every bottle that are sustainably harvested.
Its very name in Spanish means "Sacred wood". Used
by the Incas to purify and cleanse, repel insects and infection, the shamans of the Andes use it in curing ceremonies.

In a base of coconut oil (Caprylic/capric glycerides):
Commiphora myrrha (Myrrh) oil
Pogostemon cablin (Patchouli) oil
Hyptissuaveolens (Dorado Azul) seed oil
Bursera graveolens (Palo Santo) wood oil
Plectranthusamboinicus (Ecuador Oregano) oil
Ocotea quilos (Ocotea) leaf oil

Pet Renew

They should just call this "Feline Favourite".
The oils in this blend are all for healing, so leave it to a cat to prefer only the best oils for themselves.  This is the #1 blend you need if you have a cat.

Gentle and soothing,  it can be applied directly to scrapes, scratches or any booboo that needs special attention. It cleans wounds, prevents infection and supports the natural healing process with oils whose main goal in life is repairing at the cellular level.

It's pleasing natural, earthy aroma is a result of the proprietary blend of emotionally comforting oils like Geranium and Lavender blended with the gold of the Middle East, Frankincense, Myrrh and Hyssop.

Pictured above is Lambert, a 6 month old Maine Coon kitten who just had "the snip".
Pet Renew was used on his blanket in the cat carrier for emotional support before heading to the vet. Lambert now considers the cat carrier to be a safe haven and will often take naps in it now. After his surgery, Pet Renew was so gentle, that it was used directly on his "booboo" to support healing and prevent infection.

In a base of coconut oil (Caprylic/capric glycerides):
Pelargonium graveolens (Geranium) flower oil
Lavandula angustifolia (Lavender) oil
Hyssopus officialis (Hyssop) leaf oil
Commiphora myrrha (Myrrh) oil
Boswellia carterii (Frankincense) oil

DIGESTION
Digestive health is a major problem for pet owners and animal care takers.
Food allergies, unbalanced gut health, parasites, senior care and environmental toxin over-exposure are just a few reasons why animals can experience a tummy ache.

When it comes to digestive health, there is a natural way to achieve inner balance.

Inner Balance

Soothe tummy discomfort, motion/car sickness, diarrhea, vomiting

This relaxing, quieting blend has a calming effect that
can help to stimulate the elimination process when the pipes get clogged.
Can be applied directly to your animals abdomen
Diffuse in the air to create a relaxing, comforting environment
Apply to the hand and pet from the back of the head to tail along the spine

So popular and useful is this oil blend, it comes in 3 variations:
Animal Scents Inner Balance
KidScents TummyGize - also in the Lil' Oilers Kit
Di-Gize - also in the Starter Oils Kit

Horses, Livestock, Wildlife and Human adults suffering from stomach upset
can use the full strength blend called Di-Gize
Children 2 years and older get the special KidScents blend TummyGize
Smaller and exotic animals benefit from using the blend Inner Balance

In a base of coconut oil (Caprylic/capric glycerides):
Zingiber officinale (Ginger) root oil

Why the controversy?
Most essential oils on the unregulated market are not suitable to use on humans.  Over 95% of essential oils on the store shelf are either synthetic, poor quality or have fillers. Essential oil has always been associated with aromatherapy, making smell the most important.  The fragrance industry has exploded and anyone can call their "fragrance" an essential oil.  Most bottles claim 100% pure.  What this legally means is that at least 3% was at one point in the processing, a pure plant.  With no knowledge of what's in the bottle and where it came from, you have no idea what is in there.  Any synthetic or adulterated oil will cause an adverse reaction in any species and can be toxic to small animals like our pets.

Why is Young Living different?
Young Living pioneered the therapeutic-grade industry for this reason. Plants were designed to help us by supporting our bodies systems. Their oils are from plants grown and distilled
in a superior manner to capture everything that
makes that plant unique and useful in traditional alternative medicine.

For example,
Cypress (as an industry standard) is usually
distilled at high temperatures for 2 hours and tested only once = zero chemical constituents

Young Living distills Cypress for 22 hours at a low temperature and tests it over 90x
= over 20,000 chemical constituents
The more superior the profile of the chemical constituents, the more therapeutic use it will be.

The industry standard is to purchase oils and then re-bottle with the companies label; leaving room for adding fillers and loss of quality control.

Young Living grows their own oils so when you want to know where it came from, how it was grown, how it was distilled and what tests were conducted, you can personally visit the farms and get answers. They are very transparent and hold integrity to a very high standard. Their mission is to provide the best quality of oils rather than mass marketing.

This is why at Young Living you will find oils and other products  "Out of Stock" because like our planet, they are seasonal and once they are gone, you have to wait until the next season.

Other companies claim "Organic".
How come Young Living doesn't?
To put it simply, Young Living far exceeds the requirements
and it would be an insult to the oils to use such a label.

Organic certification focuses on growing in a natural environment.
It DOES NOT focus on maximizing the therapeutic potency.
To receive Organic certification, a grower must not use use chemicals for 3 years.
Compliance with this after certification is not regularly checked.
It also doesn't factor in the neighbours spraying and the chemicals floating over in the wind.
Soil contamination from the last crop is also NOT a consideration.
Seed sourcing is usually from clones.
Organic labelling DOES NOT exclude from GMO contamination.
Harvesting and distillation techniques ARE NOT a consideration.

Young Living only buys farmland that has not been used agriculturally for at least 50 years.
Farms are usually isolated, nestled between mountains and protected from contamination.
They spend 5 years enriching the soil with nutrients like alfalfa prior to planting.
Time of day to harvest and patented distillation techniques to maximize therapeutic benefits
is unique to each plant species and was determined
after personal experience planting, growing and harvesting

They have been using for almost 30 years, what is considered today to be
revolutionary farming techniques and innovative sustainability initiatives such as:

adding probiotics to the soil
crop rotation
worm farms for fertilizer
 beneficial insects to control pests
sustainable beekeeping practices
sheep and goats to control the weeds (plus extra fertilizer)
re-using left-over plant materials as mulch
collection and analysis of heritage seeds from the best for the best
reusing floral water as cooling water to save water

What does Young Living know about animals?

Well, they do have 30 years of experience and a Veterinary Council on staff.

The Co-Founder of the company was an original cowboy who grew up on a farm that had no running water or electricity. Real old school. Gary Young personally plowed many of Young Livings farms.
He worked with animals all his life and horses were his favourite.

If you were to visit the Young Living Farm - Whispering Springs Lavender Farm in Mona, Utah you can take a tour of their stables.  They have World Blue Ribbon Champion Percheron and Friesian that are a testimony to the use of essential oils with animals. You can also catch them at the
Wild West Draft Horse Show in Grand Junction, Colorado May 19-21, 2022
Wilmington Classic "Between the Sun and the Stars" in Wilmington, Ohio June 9-11, 2022
Midwest Draft Horse Classic in Shipshewana, Indiana June 24-25, 2022

As an animal lover, the SkyRiders Wilderness Ranch was purchased in Tabiona, Utah and abandoned Elk who were suffering were rescued and given a new home.  Next came the rescued Bison including the rare white bison who actually prefer the blend Peace & Calming to be diffused in the barn when they have their vet check-ups.
As a rule of thumb, the staff wear the blend Valor to project good vibrations for a chill experience.

Most recently Young Living has dedicated 1800 acres to a Desert Big Horn Sheep nursery to help repopulate the species and protect them from predators and disease. Partnering with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, they are hoping to double the population in the next decade.

Prior to the world shutting down, Young Living hosted the Animals & Oils Conference at their farm to do hands-on training to learn the benefits and practices of using essential oils for the animals

What you need to know

Quality is everything
The regulations in the essential oil industry are not enough to protect you or your animals.  Ever wonder why you can buy a bottle of Sandalwood in the grocery store for $10?  Did you know that it takes 30 years of growth before you can even extract the essential oil?  How is it even possible to mass produce bottles if it is this hard to get?  You can’t.

You get exactly what you pay for and if it was a cheap price, it is probably cheap quality. Is there a never-ending supply of it, like it came from a factory? This matters a lot to animals because they are more sensitive than we are.  Using junk oil on them is toxic and potentially dangerous.

Choosing a brand of oils means choosing a company that you can trust, that demonstrates knowledge and experience and is willing to back that up with a guarantee.

When it comes to oils, I only recommend Young Living.  They have proven integrity, quality, experience and they are willing to back that up with a money-back guarantee as well as an invite to their farms, distillery and even to participate in the harvest. No other company has this much quality control from the soil the seed is planted in, straight from the land to the distillery to the bottle.  They control what time of the day it is harvested and know precisely what temperature, time and method are needed for optimal distillation.

Never trust what can be found on the internet
It is an open forum for people to post whatever they want with no consequences.  You can google what oils to use on your pet and get 20 different versions plus a few horror stories based on improper use and poor quality oils. If you really want to help your animals using essential oils, you need to be educated from a reliable source who is accountable and experienced.  Young Living with almost 3 decades of experience has published works available. Sensitivity
Animals have a sense of smell that is 100-1000x stronger than a human. Authentic concentrated essential oils can be very strong to them and should be introduced slowly.

Hot oils (oregano, cinnamon) are oils that feel hot when applied and could make an animal uncomfortable if applied too strong.

Animals communicate and interpret emotions through scent. This can cause an adverse reaction to certain smells based on their own unique personal life experience, just like people.  Rescued animals may be reminded of a traumatic event from a smell and may not react the same as another. Once the mind catalogues an aroma with an emotion, it becomes difficult to change.  This is why it is important to introduce oils slowly for the first time so that it is remembered in a positive way.

Pets like dogs are exposed heavily to toxins in their environment like vaccinations, medications and environmental exposure.  Essential oils are natures detox to a plant so when we use them, they will do their best to try to eliminate chemicals.  Sometimes when you first start using oils the detox can be uncomfortable and cause skin irritation.  It is always assumed that it is the oils that are irritating but it is usually the chemicals already present that are being forced into the skin. This can also happen if you apply a therapeutic-grade quality oil on top of a cheap oil.  The bad oil will get pushed into the skin and a reaction may occur.  All that needs to be done is to slow the absorption rate with a carrier oil to dilute the oils.

Dilution-Size matters

Bessie the cow is good to go with Young Livings therapeutic-grade full strength oils.  But Walter the Mouse is 10000x smaller.  The best formula is 1 full-strength drop per 100 lbs, so your 10 lb Yorkie needs a dilution of 1 drop per 9 drops of carrier oil.

Dilute using a carrier oil (Coconut, Sesame Seed, Grape Seed, Sweet Almond, Wheat Germ, Sunflower Seed, Olive) or use Young Livings V-6 Enhanced Vegetable Oil Complex which blends all of these together.

Young Living formulated the Animal Scents collection with Veterinarians so that animal lovers could have targeted support that is already diluted for safety.  Lambert the Maine Coon Kitten (currently 10 lbs) can safely use Animal Scents blends 1 drop per use. You can safely use the Animal Scents blends on your Guinea Pig but it might still be a little strong for its tiny little nose. Less is always best so just dilute 50/50 with carrier oil to start.

Species
Different oils/methods for different animals.

Birds and Chickens have a distinct way in which they should be exposed to essential oils because they have feathers
Horses, Livestock and Wildlife enjoy the benefits of consuming in their feed but have different taste buds than humans
Cats are a species that have unique needs due to liver metabolization and aversion preferences.
*Special care and education is critical for cat use.  Education is a must.

CATS
The feline liver processes certain constituents of essential oils and synthetics differently than other species making them very vulnerable to poisoning.  This includes city tap water tainted with fluoride & chlorine, and artificial fragrances in our cleaners and laundry.  It's very important for kitty to live the "greenest" life possible. Cats of all breeds have a deficient P450 cytochrome pathway, making it impossible to break down certain metabolites of drugs, medications and some essential oils like wintergreen.  Cats cannot break down salicylate which is why aspirin is very bad for cats.  Wintergreen contains 90%+ methyl salicylate. They also have difficulty with phenols.

Other oils process at a slower rate and are not a danger but you don't want to overload kitties liver with too much all at once. If for example, you have an old cat who had a rough life, his liver may be already almost full of toxins.  Sometimes overwhelming it doesn't help. Less is always better with cats.  I used to be terrified to use the oils but now that I understand what to avoid, Lambert gets all the benefits of using what can help him live a better life.

AVOID - Citrus Fruits - Lemon, Lime, Orange, Tangerine, Bergamot, Grapefruit, Neroli (bitter orange)
AVOID - Hot Oils - Basil, Clove, Cinnamon, Oregano, Thyme
AVOID - Phenols - Wintergreen, Tea Tree, Mountain Savory, Laurus Nobilis (bay leaf)

As a cat owner, I like to supplement Lambert's diet with the Wolf Berry Concentrate beverage Ning Xia Red by Young Living.  I use it everyday to support my overall health and daily liver detox. They come in single serve packages so I put a squirt on Lambert's feet and drink the rest.  He licks it clean and I feel better that his health is supported too.  It is recommended* that a cat can consume 1 tsp of Ning Xia Red a day to support proper liver metabolizing and it can be given in a syringe, but Lambert just licks it off his paw so we like that way better.

What Oils Should I Use with my Cat

Any full strength oil would need to be diluted 1 drop to 9 drops of carrier oil.  When first starting out I recommend the Animals Scents Collection because they are already diluted for safety. Cats really like and prefer Pet Renew.

My cat before Lambert was named Melvin.  He used Young Living for the last 13 years of his life from age 6 to 19 years.  Lambert was first introduced to Young Living at 4 weeks old.  Based upon their experiences, here are some of their favourites:

SINGLES:  Frankincense, Lavender, Lemongrass, Cedarwood, Geranium, Copaiba, Black Spruce, Palo Santo
BLENDS:  Animal Scents Renew, Animal Scents Inner Balance, Valor, Stress Away

LAVENDER - CAUTION

Over 97% of Lavender sold IS NOT REAL.  Lavender is the most popular aroma that can be reproduced in a laboratory because of the high demand in the fragrance industry.  Anytime you see "Lavender Scented" on a label it is NOT REAL Lavender.  Just because it says 100% Pure Lavender doesn't mean that it is. There are literally not enough plants in the world to sustain the demand and fake is very common.

Fake, cheap or oil with possible fillers can be TOXIC to your cat.

Even if the company is a wonderful place with nice people and natural, organic-type labelling, they may be using Lavender's Sister - Lavandin (Lavandula intermedia).  It is an inexpensive hybrid variety commonly used that smells the same.  Great for sterilizing hospitals in Europe, it's high camphor content makes it burn the skin making this very bad for cats or people using it topically like they would lavender.

Young Living the company started in 1994 with "True" Lavender. During the mid-90's, seeds from France were brought back to North America and planted on the first farm in Utah.  Every year for decades those seeds are collected for the next crop. Young Living does not use clones.

True Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia officinalus) by Young Living:
-distilled at a temperature 20x lower than industry standard
-tested over 90x which is 89 more tests than the law requires
-certified by Health Canada as Non-GMO making it available for internal supplementation - Lavender Scones with Lavender Tea anyone?
-certified by Health Canada as a Natural Health Product for cough & cold, digestion, headache pain relief, Rheumatoid Arthritis and stress

An ongoing problem in Southern France is that Lavender and Lavandin continue to suffer with disease like Candidatus Phytoplasma Solani.  Pests like Cecidomyia (midge) and plagues of Cicada continue to threaten crops. In the mid-late 1990's France experienced a blow to the industry when a mass amount of Lavender farms were wiped out. Because Young Living had the original True Lavender seed, seed was returned to France and helped to repopulate the species.  While they were there, a second Young Living Lavender farm was planted in Simiane-la-rotonde, Provence region.  This farm now grows Lavender, Clary Sage, Hyssop, Oregano and Einkorn working in partnership with Sheep who graze and Bees that pollinate.

Simiane-la-rotonde Lavender Farm

DIFFUSING WITH CATS
Only use half the amount you normally would and always leave a window and door open.  Cats who crave what the botanicals have to offer will gravitate towards the diffuser.  If they don't like it, they will leave the room. Sometimes I would have the diffuser going on the other side of the house and old man Melvin would leave where he was and go for a nap in the room with the diffuser.
